     CARE  INFORMATION

Potentilla ( Potentilla species )

Can be late to bud out in the springtime.  Said to like very damp -- but not heavy or wet -- soil.  If soil dries out too much between waterings it may cause thin branches to die.  The more sunlight an established tree receives, the brighter the colors will be of the flowers on the current year's growth from spring to late autumn according to its type.  Choose a trunk with lots of character.  If allowed, the trunk produces a thin layer of papery bark.  Can be pruned back hard in the spring.  Branches back bud efficiently and can be re-grown.  Branches are fragile and only young ones can tolerate wiring.  Older branches easily snap when bent, and when they do they are invariably lost.  Give winter protection from heavy frost to protect against risk of dieback.
