CLUB MEETINGS
Non-members and those curious about this art/hobby are always welcome at no obligation! 10 a.m. on the Second Saturday of each month. When not at members' homes or other locations (see schedule below), we meet at least four times per year in the Ceramics Room of the Senior Center, 1514 N. APRIL 15-MAY 31, 2010 Forest tree (and shrub: cinquefoil, kinnikinnick, buffalo berry, woods rose, & common juniper) collecting season. Observers-only for the workshop are also welcome to attend on Sunday for an even more modest fee. SATURDAY-SUNDAY, JUNE 19-20, 2010 Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society annual show at the Denver Botanic Gardens. The Pikes Peak club will have some trees also on display there, so we can caravan to Denver with some members taking our trees up on Saturday and some others bringing the trees back on Sunday. SATURDAY, JULY 10, 2010 Meeting at Pete Apostolas' house in Colorado Springs, 633-7084. SATURDAY-SUNDAY, JULY 17-18, 2010 * New Location and New Month Our annual show and sale with demonstration. 9 am to 9 pm Saturday and 9 am to 4 pm on Sunday in the Citadel Mall (NW intersection of Academy Blvd and Platte Ave) upper level next to Burlington Coat Factory. SATURDAY, AUGUST 14, 2010 Building finished flat/low stands for tree display at Dave and Jenna's house in Manitou Springs, 685-1808. For a modest fee, pre-cut pieces will be available for members to construct their own stands. Power tools will be provided. Lunch with members bringing potluck/snack/side dishes. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2010 Preparation at Steve and Sonya Alford's house for the show. Members can bring in trees to work on and be critiqued for display in the show. (See also these display tips.) Tejon St., in lieu of a regular meeting. 9 am - 5 pm Fri and Sat, 10 am - 3 pm Sun. Lecture/Demo by Dave Conlin 4 pm Sat. FEBRUARY 13, 2010 Hands-on bonsai pot making at Senior Center, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm. $5 fee per person. Using club-supplied clay, members made any size/style/shape they wanted. The pots will be fired later and then be available for pick-up at April's meeting. Raffle/auction. NOVEMBER 14, 2009 It was voted to continue the current slate of officers for another year, a Finance/Fund-Raising committee and a Yearbook committee was established, and at least quarterly board meetings would be held on the first Saturday of the month to then present finished and to-be-voted-upon business at club meetings so that there would be more time during club meetings for hands-on bonsai things. DECEMBER 9, 2006 Our schedule for next year was discussed and our new member yearbook was previewed. NOVEMBER 11, 2006 Because the Senior Center was closed this weekend, our meeting was cancelled at the last minute. OCTOBER 14, 2006 Review of last month's show and ideas for next year's display. We had sweatshirts for sale with the club logo on them. We discussed winter preparation of trees and worked on several bonsai. SEPTEMBER 9, 2006 Tree prep for the upcoming show. AUGUST 12, 2006 Discussion about the upcoming show and work on some trees. JULY 8, 2006 We had an auction of a dozen pots which were donated to the club by the family of a woman who is now in hospice. These included three pots she made in 1978. A couple of members also brought in bougainvillea trees which needed and received nice summer haircuts. Bill Fox related some additional general summer care instructions for our trees. JUNE 10, 2006 At Claudia and Jim Eley's home in Green Mountain Falls for meeting, collecting and lunch. Claudia graciously furnished lunch. Also, the Denver Bonsai Society's annual show at the Botanical Gardens was the following weekend, June 17 and 18. MAY 13, 2006 At Cliff Broyle's home in Fountain. Bill Fox and Robert Baran helped other members prune and pot a Japanese red maple and tropical cherry. Also, advise was given on the care and shaping of a few junipers, dwarf jade, and ficus. APRIL 8, 2006 A repotting seminar including information on root pruning. Several members each brought in a tree and, if necessary, got assistance in repotting it. Repotting soil/grit was available at a very reasonable price. Details were given on how and where to get permits for upcoming collecting trips to the Pike National Forest. MARCH 11, 2006 Long-time member Ross Huddleson put a collected Ponderosa pine in a large cascade pot. The group then helped a couple of members shape the trees they had brought in. FEBRUARY 11, 2006 Hands-On Workshop with pre-selected but still rough specimens of San José Junipers or Dwarf Alberta Spruce. Styling and wiring only. Good turn-out. Also, a recap of Craig Coussins' Denver club workshop: extending the aesthetic triangle of a tree's foliage to include the tray, and wiring deciduous bonsai with a bundle of thin wires (starting at the base of the tree and moving up to the smaller branches).
