The cover has a background color as follows: starting at the top edge, deep maroon or red violet ; starting at the bottom edge, a medium dull dark green . Both of these colors then fade to white where they meet at the center of the cover.  The book's dimensions (closed) are 18 cm H x 12 cm W.

Note: Per the references in Peter Del Tredici's article "From Temple to Terrace, The Remarkable Journey of the Oldest Bonsai in America" (Arnold Arboretum's Arnoldia 64/2-3, 2006) pg. 30, "An English translation of [Maumenés] work was published in 1908 in the Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society 33(1): 53-70."
On Feb. 9, 2009 our researches found a digitalized version of this text which we have now linked here.  Note that the original author's name is given as "Maumerné."  We have not yet done a detailed comparison, but we do know that there are several interesting new facts and additional pictures in the English version which is NOT a mere translation.
