        Phoenix Bonsai Society (PBS, 1962) events, unless otherwise stated, are held 7:30 p.m. on the First Three Tuesdays of the Month, September through May, at the Valley Garden Center, 1809 N. 15th Ave., one block north of West McDowell Rd.   Visitors are always welcome at no charge or obligation.
How To Join Us

        Various out-of-town / out-of-state events that Phoenix club members may be participating in are marked in this type font and size.

        Tucson Bonsai Society (TBS, 1972) meets at 11:00 a.m. on the Third Sunday of every month at the Tucson Botanical Gardens, 2150 North Alvernon Way (near Grant), in the Educational Building (second gate from main building).  While our meetings are free and open to the public, non-members of the TBG will be charged the Gardens' admission fee of $5.  Contact Ray Noseck @ (520) 760-0128, or Gregory (Greg) Baumgartner @ (520) 661-4746 or (520) 762-1572.

        Bonsai of Scottsdale (SBS, 2000) activities (below, in this font and color) are held primarily at the Granite Reef Senior Center, Room 6, 1700 N. FRI - SUN   PBS: Club Display @ Arizona State Fair, 19th Avenue & McDowell Road.  Members may deliver trees to the Home Arts building near the south end of the fairgrounds on Oct. 15 - Contact Elsie Andrade at (602) 995-3870 for info.  Fair and display run through Nov. 8, on which day displayed trees must be picked up starting at 4:00 pm.

SAT   SBS: We will NOT have a nursery crawl.  The Desert Botanical Garden is having their fall plant sale Saturday and I (Patricia) encourage anyone who wants a new desert plant to work on to stop there.  Fairlee and I are bringing desert trees to work on.  I have a Desert Hackberry that I bought at the Garden's spring sale and it needs work.  Please bring trees to work on.  Hope to see everyone at the meeting.

THU - SUN      Golden State Bonsai Federation's 33nd Convention in Riverside, California.

TUE    PBS: Demonstration: "Selecting Trees" by Joan McCarter.

PBS:   Workshop with Sensei Ben Oki at Baker's Nursery with demo and display of trees.  All club members are encouraged to participate.  The cost for the work shop is $40.00 first tree and $30.00 for a second tree.  All participants must supply your own plant material.  Observers are welcome $25.00 covers both days.

SUN   TBS: Semi-Cascade/Cascade - Mini-Show and Hands-On Style Off. Focus on semi-cascade and cascade style, followed with a mini-show (and tell) of show quality and in process examples, then dividing into groups to style 4-6 trees from scratch, which will then be raffled. Bring your own to continue into workshop time! Presenters: David Meyer and Paul Vasquez.
17 TUE    PBS: General Raffle.  Open workshop time. If you had a tree styled by Ben Oki bring it in and share your experience with others.

NOTE: Our participation in this event has been CANCELLED for this year. Increased costs passed on to us have led us to carefully reconsider this show for 2010 and our Board of Directors regrettably must drop this event from our schedule.

SAT - SUN    PBS: MATSURI, the largest annual show as part of the Japan Festival @ Heritage Square, 6th and Monroe Streets near downtown Phoenix.   Free Admission.  Nominal fee parking in the parking garage just to the west.  Set up under the large Lath House at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday; take down around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.  Includes at least one demonstration and a raffle of a tree.  Again, every Arizona club member is invited to bring a tree or two or three.  This 2-day event is a Japanese Celebration and also is well attended and another excellent opportunity to show and talk about the Art of Bonsai.  This is another great time to bring your Show Quality (trees trimmed, soil cleaned up, pots oiled) Bonsai for display.  You can bring your own stand or the Club has many to choose from.  This is also a great time to volunteer to help set-up, take-down and work the booths at these shows.  Spending time in the booths is one of the best educational and learning experiences you can take advantage of and for no cost at all.  Talking to the Club Mentors and other Club Members with their years of experience is one of the best ways to advance and enhance your knowledge for the Art of Bonsai.  You all have a tree that can be ready for the Show - start working on it and join in the events.   You say your trees still aren't ready yet?  Repeat after me: "My trees will never look better than when they're on display next to other members' trees."  Bring 'em down and hang out with us.  (Review our thoughts on displaying.)

SAT    PBS: Workshop at Gardener's World with bonsai artist Cindy Reed.  3401 East Baseline Road Phoenix, Arizona 85042  (602) 437-0700.  A Bonsai workshop on Bougainvilleas is the theme.  The fee for the workshop includes a preselected Bougainvillea -- a high-bred "thornless" variety supplied by Gardener World owner Gary Petterson -- the cost is $75.00 and seating is limited to 10.  If you want to participate with the display or attend the workshop please contact or show chairman Alex Gray 602-371-8896.

Cindy currently owns the largest bonsai nursery in San Diego, Kuma Bonsai Nursery.  She is the past president of the San Diego Bonsai Club, and travels all over the country as an American authority on suiseki.

Bonsai Trees, Tools, Pots, pre Bonsai, Logo Jacket, and much more have been donated. Viewing will be at 7:30 pm until 7:55 pm. The Auction will begin at 8:00pm. All items must be paid for at the end of the night cash or checks are acceptable payment. All proceeds will go to the club's general fund supporting future PBS events! We encourage all members to attend!
