PBS: Joan McCarter, and Elsie Andrade, Phoenix Bonsai Society Club Mentors, will
be presenting a short workshop from 1:00 until
approximately 4:00 p.m. The workshop will be held at the Valley Garden Center, 1809
North 15th Avenue in Phoenix. This workshop will focus on Bougainvillea but other trees are welcomed as well. At the workshop Joan and Elsie will provide some basic instruction on designing the tree, cutting and wiring, and re potting. Other desert trees are welcomed. This is an acceptable time to re-pot some desert trees. Non desert trees can be worked on but re-poting now would be unwise. So stop by a local nursery and purchase a Bougainvillea or other desert tree and bring it to the workshop. If you have other trees that you would like assistance with feel free to bring them as well. Even if you don't have a tree but would like to observe and ask questions you are encouraged to attend. Joan has indicated that she will have some soil, pots, wire and tools with her for sale on Saturday. You may to bring your own material, soil, pots, wire, tools, etc., to support your workshop activities. The fee for the workshop is $10.00 payable to the Phoenix Bonsai Society. You may make payment at the workshop on August 9th. |

Odgers, Associate Dean at South Mountain Community College. Cindy
will visit with us and provide a lecture on the physiology and internal
structure of trees. She will help us all to learn the functions of the
various internal structures of trees and woody plants. Following this
presentation, when you create a Jin, or cut bark to make a Shari
you will have an idea of what you are cutting into, what structures you may
be destroying, and what impact your actions may have on the health of the tree. We will have a bit of time to work on trees following Cindy's presentation, so bring in your material and work or ask for help from fellow members. |

TUE
PBS: Fall Junk Sale. Bring pots, plants, tools, fertilizer, etc., anything
you no longer need but that may have value to someone else. Having items for
the raffle helps the club to produce income which helps us cover costs for various
activities during the year. We will also have a special activity on Pinching Junipers, presented by Joan McCarter. If you have a Juniper, bring it in so that you learn proper pinching techniques. If you do not have a Juniper, go to the nursery and get one. Joan will also bring in some Junipers for purchase on the 21st. Most of us have, or will have Junipers, and knowing how to pinch will help you to develop a good tree. Also, PBS Logo Clothing Orders will be taken from 10-18-08 through 12-02-08. Orders will be placed so clothing will be ready by the end of January 2009. Give your printed orders or e-mail them to Ken Roberts - kroberts12@aol.com or (480) 998-8473. Clothing items may be viewed and selected from www.sanmar.com . Be sure to indicate the product name, number, size, color and price. Cost of the logos and tax will be added to the price of the items in the catalog. The cost of the logo is dependent upon the number of items the club orders. Last year the Logo cost was $4.20 per item. Ken will develop the total cost based upon the Logo price plus tax. Go to the sanmar.com site, click on the SanMar Catalog button and then select the category of items you wish to order, Knit Shirts, T-Shirts, etc. Once you have identified your item(s), be sure to list the details, item number, size color and number of items to be ordered. Ken will order from the information you provide. Ken will put the complete order on his credit card so you will pay him for your total. We followed this procedure last year and all seemed to work fairly well. |
