        Phoenix Bonsai Society (PBS, 1962) events, unless otherwise stated, are held 7:30 p.m. on the First Three Tuesdays of the Month, September through May, at the Valley Garden Center, 1809 N. 15th Ave., one block north of West McDowell Rd.   Visitors are always welcome at no charge or obligation.
          Various out-of-town / out-of-state events that Phoenix club members may be participating in are marked in this type font and size.

        Tucson Bonsai Society (TBS, 1972) meets at 12:45 p.m. on the Third Sunday of every month at the Tucson Botanical Gardens, 2150 North Alvernon Way (near Grant), in the Educational Building (second gate from main building).  While our meetings are free and open to the public, non-members of the TBG will be charged the Gardens' admission fee of $5.  Contact David Meyer @ (520) 722-2000.

        Bonsai of Scottsdale (SBS, 2000) activities (below, in this font and color) are held primarily at the Via Linda Senior Center, Rm. 2, 10440 East Via Linda in Scottsdale, half a mile south of Shea Blvd.  Unless otherwise stated, all events will be at 1:30 p.m. on the First and Third Saturdays of the Month.  Contact President John Kudelka (480) 948-4816 for details.

20 SUN  TBS: "Potting, Repotting, & Soil Mixes", a panel discussion and presentation by the mentors.  Which ingredients to use for different species and sizes of trees -- how much organic, and what kind?  Use of pumice, perlite, granite, sand, etc.  Audience participation welcome!

THU - SUN   PBS: Club Display @ , 19th Avenue & McDowell Road, with Demonstration on last day from 1:00 - 2:00 pm.  Members may deliver trees at fairgrounds on Oct. 11 - Contact Elsie Andrade or Penny Schneck for info.  Fair and display run through Nov. 5, on which day displayed trees must be picked up starting at 4:00 pm.

SUN   TBS: "Annual Bonsai Swap & Shop" with our great potluck lunch.  Swap & shop tables open at 11 a.m., with lunch at 12:00, followed by our program.  Buyers get first choices from those members "thinning out" their collections, plus used and new pottery, tools, books, etc.  Our 1:00 program will be "Bonsai Basics-Selecting Material & Early Training" by David Meyer, offering a round-robin demo of three bonsai to be raffled.

7 TUE    PBS: SHOW OF TREES, club business, and general workshop.
14 TUE    PBS: Workshop: "Transplanting: pruning roots, wiring tree into pot & preparing soil" by Bill Parker and Max Miller.

PBS:   Ben Oki’s workshop @ Baker’s Nursery.  There will be one workshop Saturday afternoon from 12:30pm to 4:00pm and another on Sunday morning from 8:00am to 1:00pm.  To participate it will cost $50 for the first tree, $40 for the second tree and $30 for the third one.  One may observe for $25 and this would cover both workshops.  Please contact Jamie Sims for more information at jamie.sims@globalcrossing.com or Kerry Boehmer at WKERRYB@yahoo.com. 

And, the club will have a display going on there all weekend as well.  Display trees can be dropped off at 7:30am on the 18th, the display will take place from 8:00am-4:00pm both days, and you can pick up your trees Sunday at 4:00pm.

This is also a great opportunity to improve your Bonsai styling skills.  All PBS members are welcome to participate in the open workshop in the display area: bring your tools, pick a tree & pot from the nursery and start styling!  Mentors will be standing by with free advice!  Participation in the open workshop is free and the advice......only time will tell!

19 SUN   TBS: "Success with Junipers" by Gay Lynn Goetzke.  All about junipers, one of the most popular bonsai subjects all over the world -- and yet we lose them frequently here in Arizona!  Find out how to keep them alive and thriving.  Tips on pruning & wiring, fertilizing, watering, pest control.

TUE    We will begin with a raffle of about 10 - 15 of Doug Acker's trees.  The proceeds of this raffle will go to the commemorative fund we are planning for Doug.

SUN  TBS: NO MEETING THIS MONTH.
19 TUE    PBS: HOLIDAY PARTY with gift exchange at 7:00 at the Golden Buddha restaurant.  The restaurant is located in the Chinese Cultural Center, 688 N 44th street.  The Cultural Center is on 44th street just south of the 202 freeway and is on the West side of the street.  We will be able to have individual bills by notifying the server when orders are placed for dinner.  If you would like to attend the Holiday Dinner please E-mail Ken Roberts at Kroberts12@aol.com and let him know you will attend and how many people will be in your party.  If you indicated that you would attend when Ken passed around the dinner sign up sheet on Tuesday evening, you do NOT need to reply.  We currently have 26 members who indicate they will be attending.

If you would like to participate in the gift exchange that night, purchase a gift, bonsai-related or a non-bonsai gift and bring it to the restaurant on Tuesday evening.  Those participating will select a package brought to the dinner by a fellow member.  It is recommended that gifts do not exceed $15 in value.  There is no obligation to participate in the gift exchange.

FRI     PBS: First Friday: Japanese Friendship Garden, 1125 N. Third Avenue.  PBS has a display there 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  We will also have a demonstration with discussion.  Bring down your bonsai for free advice and tips.

TUE    PBS: Lecture/Demo: "Presentation: Surface dressing, moss, accent plants, stones, & stands" by Elsie Andrade.

TUE    PBS:  Please bring in all the club trees tonight as we are going to prepare them for sale at the Chinese festival and Matsuri in February.  There will also be a general workshop at this meeting for those wanting help from the mentors on their trees!

SAT    PBS:  A dig in the Tucson area.  We will be meeting in Tucson at 7:30am at the Triple T Truck Stop.  If you are interested in attending please contact Jamie Sims (Jamie.Sims@GlobalCrossing.com) directly or sign up at the January 2nd meeting.  This will be a fun adventure for everyone and a great opportunity to collect a tree for your collection.  One of our newest club members, Frank Harris, will be leading us.  The digging will be a challenge and the weather a bit cool but don't let that stop you!
21 SUN   TBS: “The Elegant Elm” by mentors Hector Espinosa and Gay Lynn Goetzke.  See examples of the many species of elm that do well in Southern Arizona; training methods, seasonal care, watering & fertilizing.  Annual business meeting for election of board members & officers.  Raffle and mentor assisted workshop follows meeting.

Advance registration is required not later than Jan. 26 for the Feb. 3-5 Ted Matson workshops.

FEBRUARY 2007  SPRING
3 SAT    PBS: A Bonsai In the Garden (BIG) event at Ken and Carol Roberts' home from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  Please bring some food to share and enjoy the camaraderie, viewing their collection and meeting the members from the Scottsdale Bonsai Club.  We have invited them to join us and they in turn will be inviting us to a BIG in March.
3 - 5 SAT - MON   TBS: Ted Matson Workshops.  Sat. & Mon. are all day sessions (advanced) for 6-8 people bringing 2 trees each per day; Sun. offers two sessions from 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m. (beginners are encouraged, one tree per session) and pre-bonsai material is available for sale by the Bonsai Center & Gift Gallery.  Workshops will be held at Gay Lynn Goetzke’s home.
6 TUE    PBS: SHOW OF TREES, Club Business, and General Workshop.

TUE    PBS: Workshop: we will prepare our trees and pots for the festivals.  Bring in club trees and your own.
16 - 18 FRI - SUN    PBS: Chinese Week Show/Display at the Chinese Cultural Center, 44th Street just south of the 202 Freeway.  This 3-day event is well attended and an excellent opportunity to educate the public about the Art of Bonsai. This event is a great time to bring your Show Quality (trees trimmed, soil cleaned up, pots oiled) Bonsai for display.  You can bring your own stand or the Club has many to choose from.  This is a great time to volunteer to help set-up, take-down and work the booths at these shows.  Spending time in the booths is one of the best educational and learning experiences you can take advantage of and for no cost at all.  Talking to the Club Mentors and other Club Members with their years of experience is one of the best ways to advance and enhance your knowledge for the Art of Bonsai.  You all have a tree that can be ready for the Show - start working on it and join in the events.

18 SUN   TBS: “Prep and Look for a Style” by Frank Venturella.  How to remove superfluous growth (cleaning up the tree) in order to find the line suited to a specific style of tree.  This cleaning preparation helps to save time at a workshop, when you are assisted by a mentor.  Raffle & mentor assisted workshop to follow.
20 TUE    PBS: Lecture/Demo: "Styling guidelines & wiring."

TUE    PBS: Show of trees, Club Business, Show Display wrap-up.  There will also be a raffle.  Some of the items to be raffled include a tree styled by Ben Oki, books, pots and a few surprises!

TUE    PBS: Lecture: "Accent Plants" by Elsie Andrade.  After her talk there will be a general workshop so bring in your trees!  The mentors will be there to help you out.

SUN   TBS: “Bonsaidontics” by Paul Vasquez.  Learn why you wire a tree, and how to apply the wire effectively; what size wire (copper or aluminum), and when to remove the wire.  Bring a tree to work on in the mentor assisted workshop and raffle to follow.

SAT    PBS: Bonsai In the Garden: The Scottsdale Bonsai Club has invited us to a BIG at Pierre Brun's home in Mesa.  Maps will be provided closer to this event.  Pierre has been involved in bonsai for many years and will have many of his trees for sale.  This will be from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

SUN  TBS: “Showtime"—Annual Exhibition of members’ best trees.  All those years of hard work, dedication, and persistence, and now we see the results.  Critique of show trees by our own bonsai master, David Meyer, with input from the audience.  Unless announced otherwise, this will be held at our regular meeting site; raffle and workshop to follow.

TUE    PBS: Spring Junk Sale.  This is a good fundraiser for the club so the more stuff the better!

SAT    PBS: We will have 2 tables at Berridge Nursery for their annual Art in the Garden event.  This runs from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  Joan McCarter will be giving a demonstration from 10:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.  Sign-up to take a tree or just come and enjoy the Art in the Garden!

SAT   SBS: Inauguration of new officers.

SAT - SUN    PBS: The club will have a small display as part of the Arizona Asian American Association Festival at Heritage Square.  We will have 3 tables there.  The show runs from 11:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. each day.  Plan to take a tree and perhaps sit at our table.  These are all wonderful opportunities for our club to educate the public on the art of bonsai.

SAT    PBS: END OF THE SEASON PARTY beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Cameron and Eilen Stewart's house in Tempe.  Please bring a dish of some sort to share with others.  Soft drinks will be provided by the club.

Please note that the Phoenix Bonsai Society does not formally meet June through August.  Occasional get-together pot-lucks are held at various members' homes to discuss and view trees.  If you have not otherwise been informed of those dates -- which are usually not decided upon until late May or early June -- please e-mail the editor if you are a member.

SUN   TBS: “Happy Father’s Day,” the best of heat-loving plants by Hector Espinosa and Paul Vasquez.  These two will not only talk about bougainvilleas, natal plum, and lantanas, they will have some beautiful show quality trees to exhibit.  Raffle and mentor assisted workshop to follow.

SAT   SBS: Workshop: Wiring - Bring a tree and practice wiring.

SUN   TBS: “Tropicals in the Desert?” by David Meyer.  Not having good luck outside?  David has the answer – try indoor bonsai (or “in & out bonsai”).  David introduced many tropical species to bonsai growers in Phoenix and Tucson for use as bonsai material, including buttonwood, Brazilian raintree, Fujian tea, ficus, and dwarf black olive.  He will review basic do’s and don’ts of these and other species; some will be for sale and raffle.  Workshop to follow.

19 SUN   TBS: “Taking Your Bonsai to the Next Level” by Gay Lynn Goetzke.  Once you have completed all the basic training, and you have a nice looking tree in a bonsai pot, what’s next?  More wiring, or not.  More pruning to improve ramification?  Fertilizing, pest control, when to repot, which pot is best, etc.  Raffle and mentor assisted workshop follows.
