TUE    NEW CLUB YEAR BEGINS: SHOW OF TREES for Phoenix Bonsai Society, club business, plans for the year.  We will be discussing the ideas of a mentoring program - to assist members of all levels with particular types of species and styles at the first couple of meetings in
September.  Please attend and share your thoughts.

We will also be developing local workshops for beginning Bonsai classes to occur on a Saturday, at key times of the calendar - to be beneficial to new, incoming people into the Art of Bonsai.

NOTE: all members need to pay their membership dues for the 2003/2004 season at the meetings during Sept. - see Joan McCarter.

Also, the new Club Membership Directory (Club Yearbook) will not be published until the end of September.  PLEASE send updates for your address, phone # and e-mail address to either Robert Baran or Mike Apostolos so you can correctly be included in the printing.

And, we will be asking the membership for approval of the Revised By-Laws and Articles of Organization in our quest for Non-Profit Status in September.  Please attend the meetings and get your contact information current so that we can get this important club business information to you.  Only Club Members in good standing (current on their membership dues) will be able to vote on these items.

PHOENIX BONSAI SOCIETY.  We are very honored to have been the recipients of this request and wish to thank all of those who contributed.  Mark's family also donated all of Mark's collection of bonsai trees and pots to the Club.  We felt the best way to share these items with the membership is through a Silent Auction.  The funds raised for this event will be combined with the donations received in Mark's memory and then the membership will decide how best to distribute these funds to honor Mark's memory.  We hope all of you will support this effort. General Workshop if time allows.  (See also Sept. 2 listing)

27
SAT    A DIG -- The general location is on Lake Pleasant Drive - south of Dynamite, on the east side of the road.  We will meet at 7:00 a.m. at the McDonalds on Union Hills and 91st Avenue, on the south side of Union Hills.  Those who want to grab a quick meal can do so.

We'll leave at 7:15 a.m. for the site.  We will go north on 91st Ave. to Lake Pleasant Drive and then proceed north on Lake Pleasant Drive.  There is a property called "Cactus World" or something similar on the east side of the road.  This property is completely fenced.  Immediately north of this property, on the east side, there is a road that has 3 large rocks blocking it; but an opening on the right side that we can ease through.  Once through this obstacle - there is an opening in the fence on the left - go through there and we will assemble there and define the area - approximately 300 acres.

IT IS CRITICAL TO GATHER AT THE SAME TIME AND GET INSTRUCTIONS - The owners of Cactus World do not tolerate trespassers - It is crucial we do not approach anywhere close to their property.  There is also a high pressure gas main ruinning through the site - we need to stay 30' away from this in each direction (East/West).  There are also some existing trees marked and being boxed - DO NOT TOUCH THESE MARKED PLANTS.

Other than that - there is plenty of material.  There is Creosote abounding - small, medium and large; there is Desert Sage; Ironwood; some Mesquite and Cacti and large Palo Verde.  Digging conditions will be easy to semi-stout.  There is a wash that runs north/south through the site - easy digging in soft soil.  Out away from this area it is light rocky - not the severity of Globe.  Picks, shovels and pry bars would work.

You will be able to get vehicles through the site to most areas - but some foot traffic will be encountered.  BRING PLENTY OF WATER.  You may want to bring something to snack on - not much close by and a lot of really nice material to dig.  BRING PLENTY OF WATER.  The material is in really good shape - the Creosote are absolutely amazing as to what great shape they are in.

REMEMBER - the boundaries are very important - please show up on time, so we can travel to the site together - it isn't far - but the dig parameters are critical.  This will be a great native material DIG.  Look forward to seeing you there. Contact Mike Apostolos (mpalapostolos@cox.net   602-494-0630) or Jim Jeffries (farwest@gilanet.net   480-893-3569) with any questions.

Power carving tool, with sander.  Drimmel will be super as will be power saw, eye protection,  mask if needed , container for water---small for your use to keep moisture on soil.    I have purchased for myself grape driftwood, juniper plant.  I will have burlap for all the people who do a plant, also  I have nails. They are coated paneling nails long enough to go through plant and driftwood.  I also have 2 small juniper plants which might work for a smaller piece of wood. If not appropriate, they would also work for a cascade.  I purchased at Baker's and they are very nice.     Make sure you have wire---#3 and smaller and perhaps even larger than #3 if your plant and driftwood and pot at large=  meaning more than 10 inches.  Make sure your plant has been watered Friday and is moist when you arrive at the SCenter.  Any questions, call me, Pam Chatfield    480-314-4386.   This is a fun project and I have only done one plant at a workshop in NY so we will be learning and experimenting together this time and perhaps another time we can have a pro demonstrate .   See you Saturday.  Plus, we will have bags of grit for sale.
