        Phoenix Bonsai Society (1962) events, unless otherwise stated, are held 7:30 p.m. on the First Three Tuesdays of the Month, September through May, at the Valley Garden Center, 1809 N. 15th Ave., one block north of West McDowell Rd.   Visitors are always welcome at no charge or obligation.
         Various out-of-town / out-of-state events that Phoenix club members may be participating in are marked in this type font and size.
        Bonsai of Scottsdale (2000) activities (below, in this font and color) are held primarily at the Via Linda Senior Center, Rm. 2, 10440 East Via Linda in Scottsdale, half a mile south of Shea Blvd.  Unless otherwise stated, all events will be at 1:30 p.m. on the First and Third Saturdays of the Month.  Contact Scottsdale President Fairlee Winfield at (480) 860-9348 (fairlee.winfield@nau.edu), or Shirley Gilbert MARSHIRL@aol.com for details.
        Tucson Bonsai Society (1972) meets at 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month at the Tucson Botanical Gardens' Porter Gardens facility, 2150 North Alvernon Way.  Contact David Meyer @ (520) 749-4155 or (520) 722-2000.

       (ARIZONA STATE / ARID LANDS BONSAI FEDERATION [Tentative Name], ASBF is a work-in-progress.  Initial exploration of the feasibility of this association now indicates that it may be premature, based on the current number of clubs and otherwise unassociated enthusiasts in the area.  It is a glimpse of the future, however...)

BREAKFAST & NURSERY CRAWL:   Members arrive early on a weekend morning at a restaurant near a pre-determined nursery.  Afterward, all go to the nursery to look for raw material.
JUNK SALE:    Members can rid their collections of undesirable or artistically stagnant stock, while at the same time helping the club raise funds with a raffle.  “One person’s junk is another person’s treasure.”  Pots, books, accessory plants, etc. are often put on the table as well.

SEPTEMBER 2001 SUMMER / AUTUMN

SAT   Guest bonsai artist and potter, Mike Hagedorn, will be giving you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see which pot really fits your tree.  Mike has just won the Bonsai Clubs International prize for his pottery.  Everyone bring in a tree that you have a pot selection question about---anything from semi-styled to fairly polished trees.  Mike will offer suggestions as to pot choice for these trees---form, surface texture, color, visual weight, etc.  To lead up to discussing member's trees, this truly international artist will talk about ceramics and pot choice.

SAT    Annual Berridge Nurseries Fall Festival. This will be our second year at this event.  The Nursery will provide 5 tables for a Bonsai Display and a Seminar.  The Festival is a one day event (Saturday), but if we wish we can be there for two days (Saturday & Sunday).  We will have our display area in a shaded area near the Stores Bonsai display.  They will be getting in more pots and plant material before the show.  Berridge Nurseries,  4647 E. Camelback Rd. Phoenix, Az.  Show: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.   Setup: 7:30 am

SAT   Kathy Shaner programs and workshops.  An all day program will be given on Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. with Kathy doing combination lecture/critique and partial demonstrations on different trees.  Workshops will be on Sunday morning (8:30 - 12:30) and afternoon (1:30 - 5:30).  Either bring your own lunch or we'll group order out for Baggin's.  To be held at the Meyer's residence.  Call (520) 749-4155 for details.  Reservations for the workshop must have been postmarked by Sept. 15.  $40 for each workshop session ($75 for the entire day), or $20 per session for observers ($35 for the entire day).  Eight work tree and six observer maximum per session.

SAT   Breakfast and Nursery Crawl for Bonsai of Scottsdale (no regular meeting).  8:00 a.m. at JB's Restaurant on the northwest corner of McDowell and Scottsdale Road (7170 E. McDowell Rd.).  9:30 a.m. at Baker's Nursery (3414 North 40th Street in Phoenix, just north of Osborn) and also to the nursery on McDowell just east of 101.

SAT   Annual "Bonsai Swap & Shop" potluck lunch and buy/sell/trade event at the TBG.  Set up at 11:00 a.m., lunch at noon, adjournment by 2:00 p.m.  Bring those potted plants, rooted cuttings, used or new pots, extra bonsai magazines or books, and price them to sell, or swap with someone else.  Call Frank Venturella (520) 790-3847 or Kathy Falk (520) 745-2148 and coordinate your dish.  If you don't call them, they'll call you!

WED   "What I learned from Kathy Shaner" will be a round-table discussion of Kathy's lecture program and workshops.  If you worked on a tree with Kathy (or had one evaluated on Saturday) bring that tree to the meeting (unless it's too big to handle easily!) and share your knowledge with us about the tree.  New feature: "Bonsai Basics - Fertilizing."  Bring a tree for the workshop!

SAT   Greg Brenden is bringing his living Manzanita trees on Saturday and will show us how to grow them and keep them alive.  Can't wait to see this.  He'll also show us how to keep moss growing here in the desert.  Wow!  The Slate of Election of Officers will be presented.

WED   Program at TBG:  "Natal plum as bonsai material" by Hector Espinosa & David Meyer.  Our mini-exhibition of various carissa specimens, trained in various styles, will give you ideas for training your own.  Discussion of various cultivars available in nurseries; trimming & wiring, fertilizing, watering & seasonal care.  You're invited to bring your own natal plum for the workshop segment to follow. Best time of year for this material!

WED    Double program at TBG: (1) "Bougainvillea for Bonsai" and (2) "Feeding the Elephants -- Portulacaria Afra, or dwarf African Jade" by Paul Vasquez.  How to select these plants for bonsai training; the various cultivars of bougainvillea and their growth habits; pruning, water, fertilizing, propagation, and lots more!  A mini-show of these plants, in various stages of training, will inspire you to create your own!  Bring one or more trees for the workshop.  (See also background info on Portulacaria.)

WED    Program #1:  "Potting and repotting of bonsai in August" by Hector Espinosa.  Hector will demonstrate his techniques for potting during the midpoint of our monsoon season.  Come to the meeting and see how its done -- and which varieties to use during this high heat-high humidity time of year.  Program #2:  "How to keep your bonsai records" by Frank Venturella; the importance of recording the source of the plant, progress in pruning, wiring, potting,  when repotted or fertilized, use of sketches and photos, etc. Bring those workshop trees! Note:  this meeting will be held in the educational building next door during renovations to Porter Hall.

SAT   (Labor Day weekend): special potting workshop at Hector Espinosa's home.  This is an ideal time to put into practice what you learned at the August meeting, and get some assistance in potting or repotting one or more of your bonsai or plants in training.  David will bring some bags of potting mix from the Bonsai Center, and a limited supply of pots (if a special size pot is needed, he's agreed to meet you at his new store nearby and find a pot).  Please notify Hector if you plan to attend, not later than Sunday, Aug. 25 at 520-747-5428. If enough members cannot attend due to the Labor Day weekend, the event may be canceled.
