        Phoenix Bonsai Society events, unless otherwise stated, are held 7:30 p.m. on the First Three Tuesdays of the Month, September through May, at the Valley Garden Center, 1809 N. 15th Ave., one block north of West McDowell Rd.   Visitors are always welcome at no obligation.
         Various out-of-town / out-of-state events that Phoenix club members may be participating in are marked in this type font and size.
        Bonsai of Scottsdale activities (below in this font and color) are held primarily at the Via Linda Senior Center, Rm. 2, 10440 East Via Linda in Scottsdale, half a mile south of Shea Blvd.  Unless otherwise stated, all events will be at 1:30 p.m. on the First and Third Saturdays of the Month.  Contact Scottsdale President Fairlee Winfield at (480) 860-9348 (fairlee.winfield@nau.edu), or Shirley Gilbert MARSHIRL@aol.com for details.
        Tucson Bonsai Society  meets at 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month except August at the Tucson Botanical Gardens' Porter Gardens facility, 2150 North Alvernon Way.  Contact David Meyer @ (520) 749-4155 or (520) 722-2000. 

 
NURSERY CRAWL & DEMONSTRATION:   Members arrive early on a weekend morning at a pre-determined nursery to look for raw material.  (We may have breakfast beforehand at a restaurant near the nursery.)  A demonstration might be held for the general public.  Some of our trees may also be displayed.
JUNK SALE:    Members can rid their collections of undesirable or artistically stagnant stock, while at the same time helping the club raise funds with a raffle.  “One person’s junk is another person’s treasure.”  Pots, books, accessory plants, etc. are often put on the table as well.

    General Workshop.

   Breakfast and Nursery Crawl for Bonsai of Scottsdale.  9:00 a.m. this day (rather than on the 30th.)  We will meet at the Via Linda Senior Center.  Our  objective is to find material suitable for the Ben Oki Workshops on Oct. 7 and 8th.  Everyone is invited to come along.  Bring your own coffee and donuts.

   Annual "Swap & Shop" potluck lunch and buy/sell/trade event at the TBG in Porter Hall and the rear patio.  Set up at 11:00 a.m., lunch at noon, adjournment by 2:00 p.m.

    Ben Oki Workshop.  Saturday at the Via Linda Senior Center, Rm. 1 from 8:30 to 12:30, Rm. 3 from 1:30 to 5:30.  Sunday at Horizon Community Center (15440 N. 100th St.), Rm. 2 from 8:30 to 12:30 and 1:30 to 5:30.  Workers and observers.  (Phoenix club with Bonsai of Scottsdale assistance.)

12 - 29     Club Display @ Arizona State Fair, 19th Avenue & McDowell Road.  Demonstration on Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. by Ernest Hasan working on a Japanese or Wax-leaf privet (Ligustrum japonicum), with some commentary by Robert Baran.

   Tucson Bonsai Society Fall Show as part of SAHBA Home & Garden Show at the Tucson Community Center arena.  10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.  Show trees, educational displays and beginner trees, raffle trees and membership literature.  Three lecture/demos (12:30, 3:30, 6:30) Fri & Sat, two (12:30, 3:30) on Sun.

    Dig for trees this side of Laughlin on the BLM land being cleared for the 4-lane highway.  We have the permits.

    Display as part of Open House for the F.Q. Story Neighborhood Association, south of McDowell Road.   Near 15th Ave. & Lynwood.  9:30 a.m. setup.  11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. show.

    Christmas / Holiday Party Potluck and Gift Exchange.  To start between 6:30 and 7 p.m.  Bring a side dish -- the Phoenix club will supply the roast turkey.  Gift exchange: $10 recommended upper limit, bring a gift and get one.

   Holiday celebration-party w/raffle-drawing.  We are all set up for our Chinese Take-out lunch at the Via Linda Senior Center on December 30, Saturday, 12:00 noon to 2:00PM.  $5.00 for the lunch, you can bring a guest.  Bring anything you'd like to contribute to our raffle/drawing.  Fairlee will be bringing cake pans of good green moss.  Also, bring a small gift for the gift exchange.

    SHOW OF TREES, club business, and general workshop.

   "Bonsai Tool Care" by Gay Lynn Goetzke.  Introduction of three-level workshop format.  All members are urged to bring a tree for workshop.

   After the Holidays workshop: bring in a left-over, sale-priced, living Christmas tree and leave the workshop with a bonsai.  Try to get an Eldarica, Aleppo, or Italian Stone Pine.  No Black 
Pine, Blue Spruce etc. they don't like Arizona.  If you fail to find the pine, pick up a nice little Rosemary Christmas tree.  They turned out well last year.

    Lecture & Demonstration: "Timeless Trees and Suiseki" by  Guest Artists Peter and Mary Bloomer from Flagstaff.  This special meeting started at 7 p.m.  A slide presentation was given which consisted of natural mountain and rock formations followed by their suiseki namesakes.  Some of the Bloomer's personal collection of viewing stones were also displayed for us.

     Display at the Chinese Center, 44th Street just south of the 202 Freeway, as part of Chinese Week.

    Dennis Makishima lecture & critique at the TBG Educational Bldg, 7:00 p.m.  Dennis will offer extensive ideas and information about all aspects of bonsai training by using a number of trees selected from local members.  $5 entry fee, payable at the door, reservations not required..
3 - 4
    Workshops with Dennis Makishima at the home of David & Judy Meyer, (520) 749-4155, by advance registration only for participants and others.  Two sessions both days, 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.  Each workshop limited to 10 participants ($40) and 5 observers ($35).  If you attend all day you can save $5 ($75 and $35).  Bring your own tree and tools -- wire will be provided.  Lunch both days will be on your own, but we may go as a group to a local facility.

    MATSURI, the Phoenix Bonsai Society's Largest Annual Show as part of the Japan Festival @ Heritage Square, 6th and Monroe Streets near downtown Phoenix.   Free Admission.  Nominal fee parking in the parking garage just to the west.  Set up under the large Lath House at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday; take down around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.  Includes at least one demonstration and a raffle of a tree.  See also Display.

   Bonsai of Scottsdale is celebrating its First Anniversary!  We'll be installing new officers, planning for the coming year, talking about an outreach program for kids, planning for some travel to conventions, and working on trees of course.  ALSO, refreshments this time.

    "Care & Feeding of Your Tools" lecture by Mark Wallerich.  If you do nothing else: after each pruning session clean any sap and debris off the tools with rubbing alcohol or WD-40 or soap & water, dry thoroughly, and then immediately put a light coat of oil -- clean motor oil will even work -- on the metal to prevent rust and corrosion.  If the black surface coloring eventually starts to come off, use gun bluing to restore.

Also we will have an experiment with soil drainage ...so we can all see why we need the chicken grit...

    SHOW OF TREES, club business, and general workshop.  Election of officers.  Bill Jamieson, one of our founding members, graciously donated a number of pots -- some going back to the days of Paul Matsusaki -- and we will be raffling some off at each of the meetings this month.  One dollar per chance.

   "Desert Natives" by Pat Patterson.  Bring a tree for the workshop to follow.

   We will have a Sayonara-tai..a Farewell party for the snow birds..with Refreshments.....a general workshop, and a showing of trees.. Our new calendar for the Year will be available.
